Lord of The Rings is to follow in the footsteps of Star Wars as Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the rest of Middle Earth head to the small screen after Amazon announced it has committed to a multi-series adaptation inspired by JRR Tolkien’s classic.

The television iteration will tell new stories based in the period preceding The Fellowship of the Ring, the novel that provided the basis for the first part of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy.

A Lord of the Rings series has long been rumoured but on Monday the streaming service confirmed it had acquired the rights to Tolkien’s work and would be pursuing the project with a potential TV spin-off.. Gandalf fans rejoice, lets just hope it won’t be total Bilbo Bobbins as Amazons track record for creating well received scripted programmes has been less than spectacular of late.. Not that I’ve seen any so can’t really judge

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s new head of scripted programming.

“We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, Harper Collins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of The Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on JRR Tolkien’s original writings.”Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien estate and trust and the publisher Harper Collins, said: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the move comes as Amazon attempts to find a worthy adversary to HBO’s all conquering Game of Thrones.. Good luck my friends

The news comes after Disney recently announced it was working on a live action Stars Wars spin off led by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, with completely new characters in a part of the galaxy far far so far way. Something the franchise may have been crying out for and I personally look forward to given the impressive second Last Jedi trailer that has me extremely excited for the next film in the franchise.
